Ageing well by design - Barossa Village

At Nuriootpa, in South Australia’s picturesque Barossa Valley, GCMA is working alongside regional Aged Care provider Barossa Village Incorporated to envision a vibrant new community, creating meaningful opportunities for intergenerational engagement, and place residents at the heart of the design process.

The innovative precinct, set on 3.5 hectares, will enable young and old to mingle in shared, intergenerational spaces, including cafes and shops, with lifestyle amenities and integrated, multi-use care facilities common to residents and the broader community.

This model of community integrated care expands care provision beyond the physical structure of an aged care facility, resulting in better individual health and wellbeing outcomes, as well as decreasing loneliness and social isolation.

Informed by our knowledge of world-leading movements and international connections, the GCMA is advising Barossa Village on the optimal blend of housing, co-curricular and service offerings. Our collective vision is focused on quality of life, environmental sustainability, and shared use facilities.

To define this blend, the GCMA has co-designed a Cultural Charter, informed by international case research, synthesizing community feedback and global best practice models in aged care. This Charter was unveiled at an innovative ‘Quiz Night’, introducing the precinct principles to the community, and capturing their response to the principles of community-integrated care.

Accordingly, the design of the precinct’s built environment and services will be informed by partnerships and curated activities that support healthy and positive ageing.

GCMA has worked closely with Barossa Village leadership to create an enabling network of businesses, Government leaders, community elders, care recipients and their families to unearth valuable insights, reflective of community wants and needs.
